The Challenge on production Cosmorons

When developing Cosmorons, Blind Squirrel Games set out to create a single/multiplayer experience where humor is at the heart of the gameplay. The game’s quirky, over-the-top characters needed to move in ways that felt intentionally exaggerated, expressive, and downright silly. Traditional animation methods often resulted in stiff or generic motions that didn’t match the game’s comedic tone. To achieve the right level of absurdity, they needed a motion capture solution that could show nuanced, exaggerated body language while allowing for creative experimentation.

The Solution provided by mocopi® (Powered by XYN)

Blind Squirrel Games turned to mocopi Professional mode and its 12-sensor system to bring their comedic vision to life. The additional sensors provided precise tracking, allowing the team to create uniquely animated movements that emphasized slapstick humor and exaggerated character interactions. With mocopi Professional mode, they could record everything from wobbly running cycles to over-the-top celebration dances—achieving the desired level of absurdity far faster than traditional animation methods would allow.

With mocopi Professional mode, they were able to:

  • Capture Comedic Body Language: The 12 sensors allowed for highly expressive movement, ensuring that every flail, stumble, and exaggerated gesture enhanced the game’s slapstick humor.
  • Create Unique Animations On-Demand: Instead of relying on pre-made assets, the team could record and refine custom animations that fit Cosmorons’ distinct tone.
  • Iterate Quickly for Maximum Absurdity: The lightweight, wireless system made it easy to experiment with new animations, encouraging spontaneous, creative performances.

The Power of Body Language in Storytelling

Beyond just humor, Blind Squirrel Games saw how body language played a fundamental role in storytelling. While Cosmorons leaned into comedy, they recognized that subtle movements could define a character’s personality, intention, and even the emotional tone of a scene. Whether it’s a victorious fist pump, a hesitant shuffle, or an exaggerated pratfall, these micro-expressions enhance immersion and give players a stronger connection to the characters they control.

With mocopi Professional mode, Blind Squirrel Games was able to fine-tune character performances, ensuring every movement—from the smallest gesture to the wildest stunt—contributed to the game’s unique personality. The ability to craft expressive, intentional motion reinforced the idea that animation isn’t just about movement—it’s about communication.

The Outcome

  • Hilarious, One-of-a-Kind Animations: Movements were crafted to enhance the game’s humor, ensuring that the physical comedy felt natural and unpredictable.
  • Faster Animation Turnaround: The ability to record real-time movements meant the team could quickly capture and refine new ideas.
  • Greater Creative Control: Having an in-house motion capture setup gave the team complete freedom to experiment with their characters' comedic physicality.
  • Enhanced Storytelling Through Motion: Expressive body language strengthened character development and emotional engagement, showing the power of movement in any genre.
