Challenge
Jonathan Williams, founder of Virtual Reality Xperience (VRX), set out to create Fatherhood Legacy, a VR game exploring themes of love, grief, and family. To authentically animate his characters, he needed more than generic motion libraries—he required original performances rich in emotional nuance and subtle body language.
As an independent studio, outsourcing motion capture wasn’t an approachable route. VRX needed a solution that was affordable, portable, and precise.
Solution: mocopi (6-sensor system)
Jonathan discovered Sony’s mocopi through early community demos and immediately adopted the 6-sensor kit upon its U.S. release. mocopi quickly became a cornerstone of VRX’s production pipeline:
-
Effortless onboarding – New team members could start capturing motion without delay.
-
Studio-free portability – Capture sessions could happen anywhere.
-
Unity integration – mocopi’s SDK and Motion Recorder fed directly into the development environment.
-
Same-day creativity – Custom animations could be created the moment they were imagined.
“When the animation I need doesn’t exist, I can make it the same day with mocopi. That’s when characters start to feel alive.” — Jonathan Williams
Results
VRX produced bespoke animations not found in existing libraries, crafting unique character movements and emotional gestures tailored specifically for the narrative of Fatherhood Legacy. By recording custom performances with mocopi, the team captured subtle body language and genuine emotional nuance, ensuring each animation reflected real human experiences rather than generic presets.
Full-body VR gameplay mechanics were rapidly prototyped and tested in Unity, allowing for iterative design and immediate feedback. mocopi provided accurate data for complex player interactions, such as hugging, hand-holding, and intricate gestures, which were essential for the game’s themes of love and family. This real-time prototyping meant gameplay elements could be fine-tuned on the fly, enhancing immersion and authenticity.
mocopi enabled a streamlined, in-house development process—preserving creative control for the small studio. Its portable setup meant VRX could capture motion anywhere, without the need for expensive studio rentals or outsourcing. The direct integration with Unity’s development environment allowed the team to instantly import and refine animations, dramatically reducing turnaround times. This empowered VRX to maintain their artistic vision, respond quickly to creative inspiration, and produce high-quality animations that set their projects apart.
Looking Ahead
VRX plans to launch the Fatherhood Legacy beta in January 2026, with a full release slated for March 2026. As a community advocate, Jonathan will share tutorials in collaboration with Sony's XYN, demonstrating mocopi SDK integration.
