Hope Hutman and Agile Lens Pioneer Mixed Reality Theatre with mocopi performed through the lens of VR

Your Mind, Girls…

When  Hope Hutman set out to create,  Your Mind, Girls…, a mixed reality, live theater performance, including digital layers only visible through a VR headset, she faced the challenge of blending live performance with immersive virtual characters. Driven by Hutman's artistic vision to explore new forms of interaction and presence, Agile Lens partnered as co-producers and creative technologists to ensure guests sat in the audience wearing VR headsets utilizing passthrough had a unique theatrical moment — a digital blend of live performance enhanced with VR. During production, the team captured body motion for character animation, allowing audiences to experience the story in a completely new way — part stage play, part virtual.

Challenge:

Few productions have merged live acting, digital scenography, and virtual performance in real time. Your Mind, Girls… needed a motion capture system that was:

  • Accessible to small studios and producers working at Off-Broadway/workshop scale

  • Portable and flexible enough for rehearsals and theatre environments with non-technical actors

  • Capable of producing natural animation for integration into immersive VR user experience during the play

Solution:

To create all of this, Agile Lens used the six-sensor mocopi system to record actors’ movements during production. These recordings were applied to virtual characters, which became part of the audience’s mixed reality experience. mocopi’s compact design allowed Agile Lens to integrate motion capture into their workflow and onboard the actors easily into the six sensors, even across different cities.

Audience Experience:
Wearing VR headsets in the theatre, audiences saw live actors performing alongside animated characters driven by mocopi-captured motion. They were immersed in the production’s dialogue and interactions between the real and the digital. From rehearsals to staging, the VR headset itself played an instrumental role in defining the hybrid experience.

 Results:

  • Groundbreaking format: Among the first Off-Broadway-style workshop productions to blend live theatre with VR staging

  • Expanded storytelling: mocopi-captured animations enriched the play’s characters and settings

  • Indie studio efficiency: Delivered Broadway-ready innovation without AAA budgets

  • Audience impact: Audiences experienced a new hybrid of theatre and immersive media

Key Features in Action:

  • 6-sensor full-body capture provided expressive animation for VR characters

  • Compact, mobile setup fit seamlessly into rehearsal and production workflows

  • Standard export formats (BVH, FBX) ensured compatibility with XR pipelines

  • Low-cost, high-flexibility solution enabled mocap at a scale accessible to indie creators

Partner Perspective:

mocopi was almost forgettably easy. What would have been days of tedious calibration and sweaty outfits was completed in less than one.”
— Henry Keyser, Director of Operations, Agile Lens

mocopi let us put performance capture on a small-show schedule. We could focus on acting and staging, then drop expressive motion onto our virtual characters to test how far a workshop-scale production can push mixed reality.”
— Kevin Laibson, Mixed Reality Producer, Agile Lens

Impact:

Your Mind, Girls… highlights how mocopi is expanding motion capture into entirely new mediums. By empowering indie creators to prototype Broadway-ready ideas at Off-Broadway scale, mocopi proves that mixed reality theatre can be a viable and transformative art form.
